Euonymus hamiltonianus var. sieboldianus (origianlly collected as Euonymus lanceifolius) - Narrow-leaf Spindletree is another large shrub or small tree adorned with dangling bright pink seed capsules in autumn. Let's hear it for autumn interest! White late spring flowers give way to the amazingly opulent fall display that will stop you dead in your tracks. The four-sided seed pods dangling in clusters each split open to display a bright red berry. Russell Stafford and I collected seed from this worthy species, clearly a close relative of E. bungeanus, at Arnold Arboretum. The large shrub was showing off a mind-boggling display in November. Fall foliage color can be pink to very pale yellow. We have a pic on the right of fluorescent red foliage probably due to stress in the pot but Wow! Old wood becomes light pewter and deeply fissured – not bad in winter. This taxa is confused. Philip Crim is on the case and we may be fortunate enough to garner less opaque info through his study... yes - Philip came through and has established that this fantastic woody is Euonymus hamiltonianus var. sieboldianus.
